NOE VALLEY WORD WEEK 2018
Noe Valley’s Annual Literary Festival
News Release, Word Week, March 4-10, 2018
Noe Valley celebrates words in their various manifestations at the neighborhood’s 12th annual Word Week festival March 4-10, 2018. Eight events are planned throughout the 24th Street business district over the seven days.
Key events are celebration of International Women’s Day on Thursday, March 8; a book reading and signing by naturalist and author Obi Kaufmann of his best-selling The California Field Atlas on Monday, March 5; and an Authors Festival spotlighting neighborhood authors on Saturday, March 10.
Other events include a children’s poetry workshop led by San Francisco’s current poet laureate, Kim Shuck, who is a resident of the area. The Queer Words reading series has a specially scheduled reading with author and KQED personality Bud Gundy. Gundy is also a Noe Valley resident. Memoirs are highlighted with Bay Area authors Erika Atkinson, Tsun Yuan Chen, Linda Joy Myers, and Ramon Sender Barayon and moderator Mary Jo McConahay. Food Literature: International Cuisine features best-selling novelist Cara Black, short-story writer Andrew McIntyre, and Flannery O’Connor Award winner Anne Raeff whose new novel Winter Kept Us Warm has just been published.
The final event for the festival this year is Therapy Animals Change Lives, a presentation by Dr. Jennifer Henley of the San Francisco SPCA. Henley heads the Animal Assisted Therapy department, which includes specially trained dogs and even a pig. Her staff and volunteers provide comfort to over 100,000 Bay Area residents each year in hospitals, nursing homes, psychiatric centers/behavioral health clinics, schools, libraries, the San Francisco County Jail, and day programs for developmentally disabled persons, and San Francisco International Airport, on occasion.
A full listing of Noe Valley Word Week events—including descriptions, dates, times, and locations—can be found at www.friendsofnoevalley.com and the festival Facebook page. All eight events are free and open to the general public. Books by the authors participating will be available for sale and signing.
Word Week is a production of the neighborhood association, Friends of Noe Valley.
